Well im getting a corn snake and told it right to keep them in large, clear plastic boxes with holes drilled in, but would not be a carpet of heat, melting?

You should always use a thermostat with a heat mat anyway, they can cause thermal burns on reptiles that are very dangerous. If you use a thermostat, it will be fine.
