...after the expiration date?
do you treat your makeup like a carton of milk? suspiciously sniffed, firmly closed and throw n out on the expiration date? i store mine in the fridge...
i don't use mascara and eye shadow so it really doesn't matter to me that it's the fruit fly of the cosmetic bag only lasting for two months... but i do store my nail polish and foundation in the cool fridge... nail polish can last up to 4yrs... to me depending on the brand..
face cream can last for 6mos...sometimes longer... concealer about 6mos... foundation 6mos to a year...smells like cheddar cheese, spoiled foundation smells very sharp.. the best ones have a dispenser instead of a screw on top...
lip gloss... touchy... 6mos to a year...lip pencils last 1-2yrs...eyeliner... 1-2 yrs...
so how do you store your favorites? or do you trash or stash?
No matter what the expiration date is on the product, or what type of strange ingredients are hot this month for makeup, there is one thing that will always be a concern: bacteria.
Keeping makeup in the fridge will slow the growth of bacteria, but it won't stop it.
The products are touching your eyes, your mouth, your nose... do you really want to chance the health of these sensitive organs (and the rest of your body, since these are orafices through which the rest of the body can become infected) to save a buck here or there? Even nail polish can harbor bacteria and lead to fungus developing under the nails (causing yellowed, dry, flaky, sometimes thick nails).
Think about it - You can buy a new tube of concealer for $2. Nail polish, eyeliners, etc - $1. If you go for name brands you'll pay more, so let's say $10... isn't your eyesight worth more than $10?
Throw that junk out at least every 3 months. By then the amount of bacteria that has accumulated on it and grown would disgust you if you could see it.

Use a Qtip and swipe your beauty products, one Qtip per product.
Wipe the Qtip across the petri dish, close it up, put it in a warm dark place, and wait.
In a few days you'll have yourself a host of little gross organisms growing across your petri dishes. Test this out with an eyeliner pencil you've only had for a couple of weeks, and one you've had for a year (same with other products).
You'll see for yourself why it's best to throw out makeup and just buy fresh, clean products rather than trying to make it last as long as possible. It's not *that* expensive, after all... especially if you use it so little that it can last you for years.
