The algorithm for two dimensional cutting stock?

I face a small IT project to determine the most effective adjustment several pieces of different shapes (eg rectangle, triangle, hexagon, circle, etc.) on a large plate. The lobby is large size plate (assumed to be rectangular), the number of pieces to be cut, shape and size. The output is the configuration layout bowl on the great plate for optimal space is used (ie smalest waste and smaller number of plates is used.) What is the algorithm for this task? thx all in advance.
